“Artificial Intelligence: Breakthroughs and Trends”

By Professor Fabio Gagliardi Cozman, University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil

Bio

Full Professor at Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Brazil, where he works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He got an Engineering degree at USP-Brazil and a PhD in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University-USA, and has served, among other activities, as Program and General Chair of the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Associate Editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal, Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning.

Abstract

A Center for Artificial Intelligence has been created by congregating several research institutions led by the Universidade de São Paulo, with substantial funding by IBM Research and FAPESP (science foundation of the state of São Paulo). The Center now focuses on basic research, spanning from machine learning to natural language processing, and applied research, particularly in oil and gas, agribusiness, and health. This talk will describe the Center for AI and the reasons why it makes sense to focus in such research in Brazil; it will also discuss breakthroughs and trends in artificial intelligence, sketching the research program adopted by the Center.
